IPOH: It’s 4am and three strangers barge into your house and search it. What would do you do?
A 28-year-old housewife, who found herself in this predicament last month, was speechless as they looked around her home, even checking the ceiling.
Eventually, Zuraida Zainul Abdin, who was breastfeeding her 3-month-old son, asked them who they were, but she was ignored.
They finally identified themselves as anti-vice officers from the religious department.
Zuraida yesterday served a 14-day notice on the Batu Gajah Religious Department on her intention to sue it for subjecting her to trauma and shame during the raid on July 25. She also wants to send the message that religious department officers cannot barge into homes without reason.
She said the enforcement officers did not apologise to her despite a news report on July 27 in which Perak Religious Department director Datuk Jamry Sury admitted the mistake and ordered the three to do so.”I want an apology and compensation for their intrusion into my privacy. I’m hoping that my actions will ensure that they will never barge into people’s homes without investigation or proof, especially in the early hours,” she said outside the office of her lawyer Ranjit Singh Sandhu here yesterday. Recalling the incident, she said she heard the front gate rattling that morning and thought that her security guard husband Mior Baderus Hisam, 39, was returning home from work.
She opened the door to check and was shocked by the men who entered without a word.
“They went into my two bedrooms and kitchen. They even inspected my ceiling before two of them identified themselves as anti-vice officers from the religious department.”
She asked them the purpose of the search and was told by one of them that they were looking for vice activities in her house.
“How can there be any vice? I’m only two doors away from the tok kadi’s house.”
The men then left the house, climbed over the front gate and ran away, even though she chased them.
She filed a report at the Pusing police station 40 minutes later and told reporters about her ordeal on July 26.
Jamry said the next day that the officers were new to their jobs and had made a mistake based on wrong information.
“My husband gave me the cold shoulder for 10 days because he thought that I must have done something for them to raid the house. If not for our children, we might have gone our separate ways.
“The neighbours were also asking my mother about the incident until she was forced to remain indoors for two days due to the embarrassment.”
She said she and her husband sought an explanation from the religious department in Batu Gajah but were given the runaround.
“I don’t usually take things to heart, but the enforcement officers went too far.”
Ranjit, meanwhile, said the Batu Gajah Religious Department had 14 days to respond failing which the suit would be filed on Aug 28.
